Hypothermia is more commonly experienced by older people and males
Australia’s death rate due to cold weather is twice that of Sweden
A body temperature below 32°C is life-threatening
Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature drops to dangerously low levels – causing your organs, particularly your heart and nervous system, to not function normally. The risk of getting hypothermia increases greatly if you’re elderly, very young, underweight or malnourished.
Seek medical assistance immediately for hypothermia.
Move the shivering person somewhere warm, removing any wet or damp clothing. Make sure that their head, neck, chest and groin area are covered with a warm blanket. Use a thermal blanket to reflect the person’s body heat and prevent shock.
